Merkel rules out new elections for Germany; coalition deadlock continues

Germany’s Merkel eyes Social Democrats in bid to form government

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected new elections and wanted to form a new government quickly, as a outcome of the failed government coalition talks with the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens.

If Merkel can't put together a coalition, the only options would be a minority government or a new election, months after the September 24 vote.

"And I absolutely do not favour, if we can't do anything with the result, asking people to vote again".

Talks between Merkel's conservative bloc and two smaller parties to form a previously untried coalition collapsed a week ago.

Chancellor Angela Merkel faced growing calls yesterday to clinch a repeat coalition deal with the Social Democrats after they dropped their initial resistance to help end Germany's political deadlock.

Welcoming the prospect of talks with her former partner, Merkel defended the record of the last coalition. "The question on the table is which kind of contribution the SPD can make for the country", Hubertus Heil, the party's secretary general, told reporters in Berlin. SPD argues people who suffer persecution for political reasons have a right to be protected regardless of how many people Germany has accepted in a given year.

Justin Trudeau calls on men to help end violence against women
Gord Friesen of the Winnipeg police said gender-based violence accounts for the largest volume of calls to the police service. Yet despite its pervasiveness, violence against women is not inevitable - and it is preventable.

"Ms Merkel is in no position to dictate terms", said the SPD's Malu Dreyer, premier of Rhineland-Palatinate state.

"If there is no coalition agreement between the conservatives and SPD by then, the negotiations will be seen as having failed", the Junge Union said in Bild am Sonntag.

Steinmeier is scheduled to meet with Merkel, SPD leader Martin Schulz and CSU leader Horst Seehofer Thursday.

Mrs Merkel's change of mind comes as a recent poll revealed almost two-thirds of Germans would back another general election.

Merkel had initially said she would prefer new elections to a minority government, an idea floated by some as a potential solution.

Huge pressure was applied to Mr Schulz by President Steinmeier and other senior SPD figures.
