Uber Banned From Operating in Israel

Uber drivers in Tel Aviv were not properly insured a Tel Aviv judge ruled

A court in Israel ordered Uber on Monday to halt a trial programme in the Tel Aviv area that the US ride-hailing company had hoped would pave the way for its full operations in the country.

That's why Uber launched pilot services UberNight and UberDay, which required passengers to pay the private drivers reimbursement fees for expenses including fuel.

Israeli law only allows drivers who have an appropriate license and insurance policy to charge passengers for rides. "The service had severe restrictions on the amount of rides each driver was able to provide so that earnings would be capped to cover auto maintenance costs as defined by the Israel Tax Authority". Pursuant to the order, given with the company's consent, Uber will be permitted to continue its normal taxi services however, its discounted transportation services - uberDay and uberNight - will be prohibited under its current format.

Brussels boots out Belfast, Derry, Strabane from EU Capital of Culture bid
Tom Watson , deputy leader of the Labour Party, said some cities have already spent "up to £500,000 on their bid submissions". The DCMS wants to continue working with colleagues in Europe, which could include participating in cultural programmes.

Uber launched its pilot ride-sharing program in Israel past year, but has faced opposition from the Transportation Ministry, which filed suit against the company in May for violating regulations.

The controversy over Uber made a big splash partially due to the fact that public transportation does not run on the Jewish Sabbath (Friday evening until Saturday evening), religious holidays, and late at night. It now operates in about 600 cities worldwide.

Former CEO Travis Kalanick resigned in June over sexual harassment allegations, and in September, the company was banned from operating in London due to violating safety regulations.
