HDMI 2.1 specification released - all details

HDMI 2.1 spec has support for VRR, 10K resolution, and Dynamic ...

The HDMI 2.1 specification is now available, which means TV/monitor makers can start making good use of it. That allows HDMI 2.1 to hit much higher resolutions and refresh rates. Combined with the Dynamic HDR support, this can deliver a richer experience for users.

The HDMI Forum, the governing organisation that creates specifications for HDMI standard and accessories such as HDMI cables, has officially released the next version of the HDMI standard: HDMI 2.1. However, to take advantage of the 10k resolution, users will need the new 48G cables which support content streaming at a speed of up to 48Gbps.

Another big novelty for HDMI is support for Dynamic HDR as well as the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology, which should reduce lag, frame stutter, skipping and freezing as well as deal with that pesky frame tearing. Quick Media Switching support is there for movies and video to eliminate the delay that can cause blank screens to appear before content is displayed.

HDMI 2.1 significantly increases transmission of compressed video up to 48Gbps.

Additional features of the new standard includes eARC, which is designed for simplified connectivity and supports advanced audio formats, ensuring compatibility between audio devices and upcoming HDMI 2.1 products. Auto Low Latency Mode automatically sets the ideal latency setting for lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity.

Although previous versions of HDMI won't be compatible with 2.1, the new HDMI 2.1 cable, called "Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable", is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI Specification and can be used with existing devices using HDMI ports.

The HDMI Forum is an open trade association that guides the future direction of HDMI technology and develops new versions of the HDMI Specification.
