Glitch Leaves American Airlines Without Pilots For Christmas Season

More than 15,000 flights are at risk after a computer glitch enabled all American Airlines pilots to put in for vacation over Christmas

American Airlines doesn't now have enough pilots to serve thousands of flights during next month's busy holiday travel period, due to a computer scheduling problem.

A representative for American Airlines has yet to respond to our requests for comment.

According to the APA, American's management disclosed a failure with the system last Friday, and as a result, thousands of flights now do not have pilots assigned to them. As of today, the union says they have not resolved the shortage.

According to Gregg Overman, the communications director for the Allied Pilots Association, there are 15,000 American Airlines flights that are not fully crewed under the current schedule between December 17 and December 31.

The group estimated that more than 15,000 flights from December 17-31 - a critical holiday travel period - were affected. As a result, thousands of flights have no pilot scheduled. "This is a crisis right now, and in that crisis, they've gone solo".

Fort Worth based American Airlines is the world's largest airline, operating about 6,700 flights a day.

Officials at American Airlines are scrambling after a computer glitch left thousands of flights during Christmas week without pilots.

Gas prices down, but high for time of year
The switch to winter-blend fuels, which are cheaper to produce, usually have some effect on Idaho prices by now. Gas prices in states within the West Coast region are among the most expensive in the country.

"The airline is a 24/7 op", Dennis Tajer, an American Airlines captain and union spokesman, told CNBC.

"We expect to be able to avoid any cancellations".

November 30 ― American Airlines said in a statement Thursday that pilots are cooperating with its effort to fix a scheduling problem that leaves hundreds of flights during December holidays understaffed, not thousands.

He added: "I'm watching a "Grinch that stole Christmas" thing happening".

The glitch has since been patched, and American Airlines has offered pilots up to 150 percent of their normal hourly wages to work over the holidays, but the union says that would go against the union's overtime rules.

"And we don't want to see that happening for our passengers".
