Explosives found in package near German Christmas market

Germany is on high alert after last year's attack on a Christmas market in Berlin

German police evacuated the city centre of Potsdam, near Berlin, on Friday afternoon after a package was found near a Christmas market containing fireworks and "hundreds of nails" in a tin.

The newspaper reportedly said police were alerted around 2.30 p.m. local time when an employee opened the package and found wires and electronics inside.

Reports said the package contained nails and some kind of powder.

What was found in the suspicious package?

A controlled explosion was carried out on the suspicious package.

Brandenburg state Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter told reporters the powder will be analyzed.

As a result, thousands of flights have no pilot scheduled. "This is a crisis right now, and in that crisis, they've gone solo". The group estimated that more than 15,000 flights from December 17-31 - a critical holiday travel period - were affected.

Police have now confirmed that the explosive device has now been defused.

In that case, a Tunisian man hijacked a truck and drove it into a crowded market, killing 12 people in an attack that was later claimed by the Islamic State group.

The Foreign Office has recently issued a warning to visitors to popular European Christmas markets to expect heightened security at festive events this year.

Germany is on high alert for potential terrorist attacks almost a year after a Tunisian Islamist hijacked a truck, killed its driver, and rammed the vehicle into a Christmas market in nearby Berlin, killing 11 more people there.

The suspect, Anis Amri, fled to Italy after the December 19 terror attack where he was killed in a shootout with police four days later.
