Qualcomm wants to stop Apple selling the AT&T & T-Mobile iPhone X

Qualcomm looks to ban iPhone X and iPhone 8 with new lawsuit

The battle between the two tech heavyweights rose another notch with Apple filing a countersuit against Qualcomm, alleging that the chip maker is using some of its technology in its line of processors that power rival smartphones. Apple in its suit, filed just a few days back, accused Qualcomm of infringing on no less than eight patents related to battery life owned by Apple.

Qualcomm filed its request to make buying an iPhone X more hard on Thursday, asking the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban all imports of versions of the device that had Intel modems. The patents in question relate to technologies that regulate power usage by turning off parts of the processor when they are not in use. "Qualcomm's paid advertising makes wildly inflated claims about its role in the development of the smartphone, but the facts show that it was Apple that put an easy-to-use computer-phone in the palm of people's hands, not Qualcomm". The new patent violation lawsuits further contribute to the long-lasting legal brawl which has seen the two companies battle it out in court, thus ensuring the continuation of their feud.

As expected, Qualcomm wants to obtain an injunction against infringing devices - preventing Apple from selling them - as well as damages.

Qualcomm already filed a series of similar claims against Apple back in July, again asking for payments and for a ban on iPhones.

Then the team lost its eighth straight on Sunday, matching the longest skid for this franchise since February 11-March 3, 2009. Bickerstaff went 37-34 in that role, which included a playoff berth.

General Counsel Don Rosenberg in a statement said Qualcomm filings are not a direct denial to Apple's complaint. In response, Qualcomm is hitting Apple with another lawsuit that specifically applies to iPhones that can be obtained from AT&T and T-Mobile.

Qualcomm's claims all quote Apple executives ire at finding Samsung copying Apple designs. What's more, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the chipmaker has asked the US International Trade Commission to halt imports of iPhone X handsets using modems from Intel. Carriers that sell the iPhone X with a modem provided by Qualcomm-available through Verizon, Sprint and sold as an unlocked device-would still be available.

Qualcomm in one case says that Apple is replying on its patented technology to create the iPhone's Portrait Mode effect.
