Syrian Army Intercepts Missiles Near Damascus

According to earlier reports, Israel has launched a number of airstrikes targeting Syria's territory from Lebanese airspace.

Israeli missiles struck a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defence system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

The Israeli air force has said it struck arms convoys of the Syrian military and Lebanon's Hezbollah almost 100 times during more than six years of the Syrian war.

The Syrian army's air defense at 12:30 AM Saturday, confronted an Israeli missile attack on one of the military sites in Damascus countryside, SANA reported Saturday morning. In this way, Israeli officials claim that their strikes are counterterror operations as the resistance group is considered a terrorist organization under Israeli law.

A report last month said that Iran was building a permanent military base in southern Syria.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned that Israel will not allow Iran to establish a military presence near its borders.

The video was recorded Thursday, before the alleged strike, and is set to air in full on Sunday at the Brookings Institution's annual Saban Forum in Washington, DC.

"Let me reiterate Israel's policy: We will not allow a regime hell-bent on the annihilation of the Jewish state to acquire nuclear weapons".

Aljazeera reports that the Israeli raid was targeted at government military sites and Hezbollah positions and that the sound of large explosions caused by the raid was heard in the capital and surrounding areas.
