US Quits Migration Pact, Saying It Infringes on Sovereignty

US pulls out of global compact on migration

"The United States has made a decision to end participation in the UN process to develop a Global Compact on Migration (GCM)", Tillerson said in a statement.

Negotiations on the GCM will be based on the New York Declaration, a document adopted by the United Nations in 2016 that commits to "strengthening global governance" and contains a number of policy goals that are inconsistent with US law and policy.

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, opposed the withdrawal, according to Foreign Policy.

In a statement released late on Saturday, the us mission to the United Nations noted that President Donald Trump made the decision.

The United States "will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country".

The United States has walked away from a United Nations effort to ease the global migration and refugee crisis, with the Trump administration saying it was no longer compatible with US principles or priorities on the issue.

In September previous year, the 193 members of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a non-binding political declaration, the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, pledging to uphold the rights of refugees, help them resettle and ensure they have access to education and jobs.

The United States notified the United Nations that it will no longer take part in the global compact on migration, saying it undermines the nation's sovereignty.

Former Yemen rebel ally Saleh calls for talks with Saudi Arabia
He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

Migrant-rights advocates expressed a mix of shock and bafflement at the Trump administration's announcement, asserting that nothing proposed in the Global Compact would be mandatory.

According to the USA permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley, "no country has done as much as the United States".

He added that the United States "has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome".

Under Trump, the USA has taken hard line on immigration.

Three days of preparatory talks begin in Mexico on Monday ahead of the start of formal negotiations in February over the non-binding pact.

Significantly, the Trump Administration has separated from many global commitments including the UNESCO and Paris climate agreement.

Trump, who has championed the pursuit of a "foreign policy based on American interests", has threatened to quit a number of other worldwide accords, including NATO, NAFTA and the Iran nuclear deal. "But our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone".

The US Embassy in the United Nations said that President Donald Trump is determined to be separated from the agreement process.
