Donald Trump May Be Trying To Keep Mitt Romney Out Of Sentate

REPORT: Trump Working Against A Future Senator Romney

The president is traveling with current Sen.

Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to run for re-election in Utah, causing some to speculate the president wants to block former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from seeking election for the seat, Politico reported Sunday.

According to Trump deputies, the president's relationship with Hatch began before Romney planned of being Utah's senator.

The former MA governor was reportedly seriously considering running for Senate in his new home state of Utah, under the condition that the state's longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, decided not to run for re-election in 2018.

But privately, Trump has signaled support for an effort to submarine Romney, who is considering running for Hatch's seat - but only if Hatch retires.

Romney was planning to run for the position held by Hatch, on the assumption the senator would retire, according to a report by Politico.

Privately, he said he would prioritize stopping Romney, even if it meant backing Hatch, who entered the Senate in 1977.

Mayfield, Love, Jackson Named Heisman Finalists
The senior finished in fourth in 2015 before climbing up to third in 2016, throwing 76 touchdown passes between those two seasons. Love led the Pac-12 and was second in the nation with 1,973 rushing yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

Asked if he was going seek re-election, Hatch told reporters: "We'll have to see".

"We hope you will continue to serve your state and your country in the Senate for a very long time to come", the Republican president told Hatch, who is contemplating retirement as the end of his seventh term approaches.

"He's a good man. Mitt's a good man", Trump said. Trump himself seemed to confirm the theory during a speech at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, when he addressed Hatch before the crowd. Either way, Trump-not to mention his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who is allegedly considering a Hatch endorsement-may not have much of a choice in the matter.

Hatch will accompany Trump on his trip to Salt Lake, to his meetings and the signing of an executive order that will reduce the size of the Bears Ears and Escalante national monuments.

Trump considered picking Romney as his secretary of state a year ago but opted instead for Rex Tillerson.

Trump called Hatch "a very special man" on Monday. One side is racist, bigoted, Nazi. "His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University", Romney said.
