John Conyers retiring from Congress amid sex harassment claims

The Latest Conyers lawyer says accuser jumping on bandwagon

Conyers last month stepped down from his position as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee after acknowledging that in 2015 he settled a wrongful dismissal complaint, though the congressman denied the sexual misconduct accusations against him.

Conyers, who spoke for the first time since returning to his home district amid allegations of sexual harassment, made the comments on Mildred Gaddis' radio show in Detroit. Conyers also said he backs his son, John Conyers III, as his replacement, though CNN reports his grandson might also be running for the seat.

Conyers' endorsement of his son's candidacy is made even more complicated by the fact that Conyers' grand-nephew, MI state Senator Ian Conyers, 29, also recently announced he will be running for Conyers' seat.

The decision sets up a battle within the Conyers family for his Detroit-area House seat.

The move comes amid numerous calls, including from Democratic leadership, for Conyers to step down in light of allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment against him.

On Monday, yet another allegation was lodged against Conyers, when a woman who said she worked for the congressman for more than a decade, Elisa Grubbs, said he slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church.

Russian FM slams Nikki Haley, calls her North Korea comments 'bloodlust'
They said that the North Korean side expressed readiness to engage in talks, but demanded that Moscow play a mediating role. He continued to say that Ms Haley's speech to the UN Security Council meeting was " a really bloodthirsty tirade ".

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now".

But after being publicly accused by one woman after another in recent weeks, he faced growing calls to resign from colleagues in the House, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. This, too, shall pass.

He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances. "And I want to be able to talk about it and fix the system without having people say 'Blake, you benefited from the system". The 88-year-old Democrat is the longest-serving current House member.

She said in the affidavit she saw Conyers groping and stroking Brown's legs and the legs of other women in the office and that she saw Brown shortly after an alleged event in Chicago in 2005 where Brown said Conyers' propositioned her in a hotel room.

Following news of the allegations, Conyers was hospitalized in Detroit for a stress-related illness, according to his lawyer Arnold Reed.

The House Ethics Committee is reviewing allegations of harassment against John Conyers. In one instance he appeared to mock all the women who have used the #MeToo hashtag to share their stories of assault, harassment, or rape.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers.
