Feltman's visit comes after the outrage sparked by the Kim Jong-Un regime over its latest ballistic missile trial on November 28. -South Korea joint air force exercise involving hundreds of fighter jets and tens of thousands of troops.

Feltman, the UN's under secretary general for political affairs, arrived in China yesterday as Beijing is one of the few transit points to North Korea in the world.

The UN confirmed that he will be staying for four days, and will meet with several senior North Korean officials, including foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho, and vice-minister Pak Myong Guk.

The last visit by a senior United Nations official was when Valerie Amos, then United Nations aid chief, travelled to the country in October 2011.

The visit was first said to have been discussed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September, but not confirmed until recently. His trip comes about a week after North Korea test-fired a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that it says is capable of hitting the entire United States.

US President Donald Trump has engaged in months of tit-for-tat rhetoric with Kim, pejoratively dubbing him "Little Rocket Man" and a "sick puppy". Asked about Feltman's visit, a spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations said that "while our focus remains on finding a peaceful diplomatic solution, the reality is that the regime has shown no interest in credible negotiations".

Over the weekend Trump's National Security Adviser HR McMaster told a security forum that the potential for war with the North "is increasing every day".

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has, on various occasions, voiced his interest in serving as a mediator to resolve the North's nuclear issue.
