Instagram Combats Animal Cruelty By Banning Selfies With Exotic Animals

Protecting Wildlife and Nature from Exploitation – Instagram

This alert system - which thus far seems specifically tailored to abuse against wildlife - will send users a warning message if a hashtag they search can be related to cruelty to animals.

Koenen, of World Animal Protection, wants to get language about animal welfare added to Instagram's guidelines for what people can post on the platform to begin with.

Instagram officials said in a statement that the protection and safety of the natural world is "important to us and our global community".

The explosive trend of posting wildlife selfies on the site has driven the suffering and exploitation of some of the world's most iconic animals across the globe.

Instagram will start issuing warnings on selfies with the adorable Australian marsupial and other wild animals - with animal-cruelty cautions appearing when users search or click on hashtags including #koalaselfie, #lionselfie or #tigerpet as of Tuesday, National Geographic reports. However, in some cases, there are photos and clips that show animals being forced into doing certain acts, which are condemned by animal rights groups. "We're trying to do our part to educate them", she expressed.

"Wild animals are being taken from their mothers as babies and secretly kept in filthy, cramped conditions or repeatedly baited with food causing severe psychological trauma just so tourists can get photo".

UGA football players arrested after SEC Championship win
He was also investigated for alleged marijuana use in his dorm room last October and subsequently cleared . "It was a mistake". This would be a third violation of Georgia's drug policy, which subjects him to dismissal from the team.

The decision followed an investigation by National Geographic and World Animal Protection into wildlife tourism.

With their teddy bear frames and heart-melting faces, taking a selfie with a koala to upload to social media has become a mandatory part of any student's gap year. Instagram now displays a content advisory screen that informs a user about hashtags-such as #slothlife-that might be promoting animal exploitation. Kardashian and her half-sister, model Kendal Jenner, are also regular visitors to the Black Jaguar-White Tiger animal rescue foundation, which houses exotic animals including pumas, lions and jaguars.

Instagram hopes to make users think twice about what's going on behind the picture.

The introduction of the warning feature is part of a fine line that social networks walk between stopping the spread of negative images and censoring users.

"For Instagram to really step up now and recognize it and take strong measures, I think is very significant", he concluded. Wildlife experts say that behind the scenes, many wild animals suffer.
