Chicago Cubs agree to deal with Tyler Chatwood

On Thursday, the Cubs announced that they've signed pitcher Tyler Chatwood to a three-year deal through the 2020 season.

Adding Chatwood boosts a rotation that will likely lose former Cy Young Award victor Jake Arrieta and veteran John Lackey.

Chatwood, who turns 28 later this month, went 8-15 with a 4.69 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 33 games, including 25 starts, for the Rockies in 2017. This makes sense as Lackey is 39 years old and was 12-12 with a 4.59 ERA last season.

Chatwood sported a 6.01 ERA and 1.68 WHIP at hitter-friendly Coors Field past year, but his numbers on the road indicate the Cubs may have acquired a nice under-the-radar starting pitcher: 3.49 ERA, 1.23 WHIP.

If none of the parties are attorneys then there is obviously no privilege. Legal experts say that's not how attorney-client privilege works.

Chatwood has had stark home-road splits while calling hitter-friendly Coors Field his home. He was tied for the league lead in losses despite the Rockies earning a Wild Card berth.

Part of the Cubs' belief is that Chatwood will find more consistency away from Coors Field. He figures to slot into the rotation behind Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana. He missed all of 2015 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and hasn't yet truly established himself as an innings eater.

Chatwood has signed as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs. Mike Montgomery presumably will also be up for a starting role, and the Cubs could still look to add another hurler to the mix, as they recently had a meeting with high-profile free agent Shohei Otani and have had reported interest in Tampa Bay Rays hurler Alex Cobb.
