Storm Caroline to bring snow and 80mph winds to the UK

TEMPERATURES plunging as low as -8C by Sunday will mark another dramatic change in Scotland's weather after Storm Caroline battered the north with gusts reaching 93mph.

The weather warning was issued shortly after 2pm on Tuesday.

The Met Office said the high winds were expected to damage buildings and cause flying debris, as well as power cuts, severe travel disruption and unsafe waves.

Meanwhile later today (Thursday) according to the Chief Forecaster "snow showers will turn increasingly frequent and heavy across large parts" of Northern Ireland.

"1cm to 5cm of snow is widely expected, with up to 10cm in places".

Met √Čireann said Thursday will be bitterly cold overall, with gusty north to northwest breezes bringing showers over parts of Ulster, Connacht and west Munster by the afternoon.

Sunday's weather warning is in force from 04.00 on Sunday until 23:55.

A yellow "be aware" warning is in force for the southern half of Scotland and parts of the north of Northern Ireland between 6am and 6pm as well.

An North Sea oil rig, off the north-east coast of Scotland, is being partially evacuated over fears extreme waves caused by Caroline could endanger workers.

'Overnight, the main feature will be the increase in wind as Caroline starts to come in towards the end of the night.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Northern Ireland, with Storm Caroline expected to brings snow, ice and winds of up to 70mph.

A spokeswoman said: "Possible travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers with possible delays and cancellations to rail and air travel. There is a good chance that power cuts may also occur".

Later this week, snow and falling temperatures are forecast for parts of Britain.
