CNN corrects report about Trump campaign and Wikileaks tip

The president then referred to ABC's Brian Ross, who was suspended last week after inaccurately reporting that former national security adviser Michael Flynn said he would testify that Trump directed him to contact Russian officials during the campaign, as a "fraudster". The report has been updated to reflect the correct date, and the email is included in this update.

Today, it was CNNs turn to bungle a “bombshell” concerning the Trump campaign and Wikileaks. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange later tweeted that he did not see how WikiLeaks was connected to CNN's story.

As it turns out, the email was dated September 14. That development, too, had been publicly reported earlier that day.

The email was provided to investigators working on the Congressional inquiry into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign team and Russian officials during the 2016 U.S. election.

So, two of CNNs ace political reporters managed to write a “bombshell” story, which presumably made it through at least one round of edits, and was also probably reviewed by the networks legal department, without anybody double-checking the date of the email - the crux of the entire.

CNN presented the timing of Trump Jr.'s tweet as a possible reason to doubt his claim that he never even saw the email.

The problem is, according to The Washington Post, CNN had the date wrong.

CNN issued a correction and a statement on Friday afternoon.

CNN reported Friday that congressional investigators are interested in an email Trump Jr. received on September 4, 2016, that included an encryption key and link to a website with leaked emails from former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Trump Jr last month released a series of private Twitter exchanges between himself and WikiLeaks during and after the 2016 election, including pleas from the website to publicise its leaks.

An email given to congressional investigators shows that members of the Trump campaign were offered a website address and decryption key that would give them access to hacked Wikileaks documents.

"We understand that the media reported 12 hours prior to this email that the DNC emails had been hacked or leaked", Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Trump Jr, told CNN.

A 2016 email sent to President Donald Trump and top aides pointed the campaign to hacked documents from the Democratic National Committee that had already been made public by the group WikiLeaks a day earlier. Just after CNN published their story, The Washington Post ran another story with the correct date - September 14, 2016 - and the network was forced to apologize for their earlier reporting. Trump began touting how much the media has been apologizing for fake news.
