Facebook can now find your face, even when it's not tagged

Facebook has announced that it is rolling out a new feature which leverages its facial recognition technology to tell you when it thinks you've appeared in a photo but haven't been tagged.

When you are notified, you then have the choice to add your tag to the photo, leave yourself untagged, or report the photo as inappropriate. If someone is trying to use your photo as a profile picture, Facebook will give you a notification.

The features demonstrate how Facebook is using a trove of facial recognition data, a type of data that has become a key focus for tech titans. This approach was preferred by users over having settings for individual features that use facial recognition, Candela said.

Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, director of applied machine learning at Facebook, notes that if you are in a photo and are part of the audience for the post, you'll now be notified, even if you haven't been tagged.

Facebook is also using facial recognition to create new tools for those with visual impairments.

You'll now get notifications if you're present in a photo uploaded to Facebook, but not tagged in that photo.

While there are benefits to the new tool - seeing potentially problematic photos before they spread, being alerted when someone else attempts to use a photo of you as their own profile photo, or simply not missing memories of fun events - some Facebook users are undoubtedly going to be uncomfortable with Facebook taking this matter into its own hands.

Detroit is outplaying Chicago on offense, defense and special teams, and the Lions have taken a 13-3 lead into halftime. Matt Stafford completed 25-of-33 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's Week 15 win over the Bears .

Since you might not want Facebook's AI out there looking for you, there's also a way to turn it off.

Facebook also introduced new tools to try to prevent harassment Tuesday. When a new photo or video shows up on Facebook, it is compared to the template to determine who it is.

Head into the settings and you'll find a new "on/off" toggle for Face Recognition. That includes the United States but not Canada and Europe, where regulators have raised concerns about Facebook's existing facial recognition features and how the company complies with privacy laws.

Facial recognition may make the world safer, or more authoritarian, or just weirder - depending on your perspective.

Introduced two years ago, the technology recognises broad object categories like "trees" or "river" and will now be able to read out the names of people in the photos too, provided they Facebook users.

"If someone is being harassed, blocking the abuser sometimes prompts additional harassment, particularly offline", Davis wrote.
