Intake of primary nutrients and bioactives in green leafy vegetables is associated with slower cognitive decline, according to a study published online December 20 in Neurology. The study team checked health records and cognitive function for 1,000 study participants.

Overall, researchers found that eating more leafy, green vegetables was associated with a slower decline in memory and thinking skills.

The food frequency questionnaire assessed how often and how many half-cup servings they ate of spinach, kale or lettuce.

Researchers in the USA have found that eating approximately one serving per day of green, leafy, vegetables, was linked to slower decline in thinking ability.

Medical experts suggest eating green vegetables and fruits on regular basis. In fact, their scores were similar to those of people 11 years younger, irrespective of other factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and education level. Whereas, the ones who were in the lowest serving group ate on average 0.1 servings per day. "Effective strategies to prevent dementia are critically needed", said Morris. Their thinking and memory skills were then tested yearly, over a course of 4.7 years.

According to The Independent, "those who performed the best in memory and intelligence tests ate an average of about 1.3 servings per day", and the study's lead researcher, Dr Martha Morris, said of the findings, "adding a daily serving of green, leafy vegetables to your diet may be a simple way to foster your brain health".

The new research was published today in the journal Neurology.
