Our Opinion: Taking a CHIP from children's health care

The deadline for CHIP reauthorization passed in September without Congress agreeing to an extension

Perhaps he can appeal to his more conservative members by emphasizing the federal funding protects pregnant women who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid - they are gainfully employed - but too little to afford private health insurance. Over 22,000 children in Idaho currently rely on CHIP for health coverage and Idahos members of Congress need to act now to renew funding for this critical program.

Top Washington lawmakers maintain the CHIP program money will be restored as part of a spending bill once the tax measure is out of the way, but Tennessee Democrats mince no words about why it's taken so long.

Florida is slated to run out of CHIP funding in January, according to the latest report from Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families.

As leading national, state, tribal, and local organizations concerned about the health and well-being of America's children and pregnant women, we are writing to urge you to immediately enact a strong, five-year extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Those states join Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma, which have already warned that coverage may end or be reduced in coming months. CMS and the states have been scrambling to shift other funds around to keep the program going.

This is now considered the longest lapse in funding in the program's history. It is a strong bipartisan state-federal partnership that gives governors broad flexibility to design their programs to target the needs of their child populations.

Interim fighter aftermath - US Commerce Dept. upholds duties against Bombardier
Bombardier argues that they wouldn't since Boeing does not make an aircraft the size of the 100- to 130-seat CS 100. The Chicago-based aircraft manufacturing giant said the final duty determination validates its complaint.

Kelly Haight, spokeswoman for North Carolina's health department, said the state's 220,000 children receiving assistance under the program "will not experience any interruption in benefits at this time" because the state had enough money for the beginning of 2018.

Alabama has one of the more generous eligibility ranges for the program.

The Republican-controlled House has voted to extend the 20-year-old program for five years and would fund it by charging richer Medicare enrollees higher premiums and taking money from a public health fund created under the Affordable Care Act.

The House and Senate must approve a continuing resolution to fund the government before the end of the week.

Democrats had been hammering Republicans for passing their sweeping tax-cut legislation while CHIP remained in limbo, arguing it would leave millions of families who depend upon the program uncertain over their future at the holidays.

"Connecticut has been able to continue offering HUSKY B ... by using leftover federal funding".
