Husband arrested in connection with woman's stairwell death in Brooklyn

Husband Arrested and 2 Officer Suspend in Dead of Brooklyn Mother 29122017

Two New York City Police officers have been suspended on suspicion of failing to perform a welfare check on a 22-year-old pregnant woman who was later found dead in her Brooklyn home - and now her husband has been arrested in her death.

Kemper said Wells had bruising on her neck "and it appears as if she was either pushed or fell down the flight of stairs leading to the basement".

Sources close to the NYPD revealed that officers were "responding to a wellness check" at the couple's home but failed to get out of their patrol vehicle in a statement to The Post.

A pregnant mom was found dead Wednesday at the bottom of a basement staircase inside her Brooklyn home - and cops suspect her husband strangled her.

The NYPD suspended two 77th Precinct officers the day of the killing after it was revealed they botched a job to check on the woman. EMS pronounced Wells dead at the scene.

While officers were dispatched to the Wells' Crown Heights residence, they didn't even get out of their auto to check on the woman, law enforcement sources told the Post.

Shootings in Troy Leave One Dead and Four Wounded
Police say 56-year-old Eddie Blair was killed in the shooting, and his body was found in a backyard adjacent to the home. According to police, officers responded to the 100 block of Chapman Street at 10:25 response to shots fired.

Wells' husband, Barry Wells, was taken into police custody around 6 p.m. Wednesday with the assistance of family, friends and the New Rochelle Police Department, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said on Thursday.

Neighbors told the newspaper they were shocked by the violent tragedy. "It was definitely him".

Police were also looking into reports that the first wellness check on Wells may not have been adequately conducted.

"An initial determination deemed this person's death to be suspicious and it is now being investigated", said deputy chief Michael Kempfer, according to CBS News.

"They believed the incident occurred outside, so they didn't go in", a source said.

Barry Wells was taken to Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx after he told investigators he had tried to take his own life, but Boyce said it was determined to not be true.
