Kabul blast kills 25 at Afghan Voice news agency, cultural center

Kabul blast: US condemns attack, vows to 'work closely' with Afghanistan to hunt down terrorists

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which comes days after a suicide bomber killed six civilians in an assault near an Afghan intelligence agency compound in the city.

According to a report this month by media freedom group Reporters without Borders, Afghanistan is among the world's most risky countries for media workers with two journalists and five media assistants killed doing their jobs in 2017, before Thursday's attack. In the past, Islamic State loyalists have singled out Shiites for attack, and the group claimed to be behind an attack last month on another news organization in Kabul, Shamshad TV.

"The target of the attack was the Tabayan cultural centre".

A journalist at Afghan Voice, Sayed Abbas Hussaini, said there appeared to have been more than one explosion during the attack. He said that two blasts after the suicide bombing within the Tebyan center were caused by improvised explosive devices that inflicted relatively few casualties.

The ministry of interior had earlier pegged the death toll at 30.

Islamic State also claimed Monday's attack on the National Directorate of Security spy agency in a statement via their Amaq propaganda arm. He added that one reporter at the agency had been killed and two injured.

The spokesperson said the building where the attack took place also houses the office of the Sada-E-Afghanistan (Afghan Voice) news agency and a mosque.

Eight women and 74 men were injured in the attack, the minister of interior said.

Afghanistan has the highest number of mine victims in the world, which along with other roadside bombs kill or wound an estimated 140 people every month.
