AT&T Has Five States To Go As FirstNet Deadline Looms

This first responder-centric network is the result of years of work. During the rollout, AT&T said it will continue to explore upgrades like 5G.

AT&T has stated it expects to spend about $40 billion over the life of the deal to build, deploy, operate and maintain the network. AT&T says it will build the foundation next year, adding Band 14 for more capacity and coverage, as well as identifying and hardening "certain critical sites" in states, including places where natural disasters are likely.

If states choose not to take part in FirstNet, they need to fund their own network that connects to AT&T's public safety system.

The decision to reverse course and opt-in, however, Sununu said, came from his conversations with other state governors.

First responders across the United States now have access to FirstNet after all 50 states, two territories and Washington, D.C. opted into the network.

WhatsApp ends support for BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone
There still are quite a few Windows Phone 8.0 users, though, refusing to give up the sturdy Nokia hardware and Windows OS. What this means is that WhatsApp will no longer actively develop its app for the aforementioned operating systems.

The December 28 deadline, Sununu said, was too tight for other states causing New Hampshire to be the lone state who opted out. "It's an honor to help bring FirstNet to MS and to its dedicated public-safety community".

"Whether we're responding to wildfires in eastern Washington or floods in western Washington, our first responders must have a reliable communications network and this process was about ensuring we get them the best service possible", Inslee said in the press release.

States were given until Thursday to decide if they wanted to opt-out of involvement with the FirstNet program.

Decisions from American Samoa, Guam and Northern Marianas Islands are not due until March 12.

"Together, we conducted the nation's most thorough state level review of available FirstNet options, negotiated hard on behalf of the state and its first responders, and ultimately obtained one of the best opt-in plan proposals of any state in the country", Stevens said in a statement.
