Canadian Blood Services in need of donations

Last year the volunteers recruited 120 donors at the Surrey donation centre

United Blood Services of the Dakotas is asking for help to make up for the large decrease in blood donations this holiday season.

Around 900,000 people gave blood last year, but around 200,000 new blood donors are needed each year to maintain the numbers for life-saving blood donations. While some people are spending time at home with their families, others are spending the holidays in the hospital.

Canadian Blood Services put out an urgent call on Dec.18 for eligible donors to fill 35,000 open appointments by Jan 6.

"It's understandable, everyone's busy this time of year especially, but we're also Canadian and we're always in a giving mood so we'd like people to step forward and book their appointments to donate across the country", said Belinda Tomiyama, Canadian Blood Services' Lethbridge territory manager. But there are still 942 open appointments in Edmonton to help meet the national target.

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.

The New Liskeard Blood Donor Clinic has 120 spots to fill.

Ukrainian government, rebels start major prisoner swap
Twenty people who had been held in Ukrainian government custody refused to return to pro-Russia breakaway regions, Kiev said. Kiev accuses Moscow of sending troops and heavy weapons to the region, which Russian Federation denies.

- December 27 to December 29, from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m, and 3:30 p.m.to 7:30 p.m.

All blood types are encouraged to donate, but the supply of O-negative blood is in demand because it can be used by any recipient regardless their blood type.

Blood and blood products are a critical part of every day medical care including major surgeries, medical procedures, cancer treatments and managing disease.

It takes about two days for blood to be tested and prepared to send to patients in need.

New and existing donors are welcome and walk-ins will be accepted, says Canadian Blood Services.
