Near Record Cold, Arctic Air to Stay

Some sunshine Friday

Low clouds will give way to mostly sunny skies today and keep the afternoon comfortable and rain free. Temperatures will start in the upper 40s and drop from there. Mostly cloudy Monday and Tuesday, high in the high 30's to around 40. Either way, a cold rain will be likely for those who do get wet through Sunday afternoon as temperatures start to rise, but coverage of rain around 30 percent means not everyone will be dealing with precip on the last day of the year.

Lows on Sunday night into Monday morning are forecast to be in the mid to upper teens.

Saturday we will see a cold front move into the region. If they're slow to clear, we could hover closer to 50 for highs. A breeze produced wind chills 0° to 10° in the morning, and chills will stay in the teens to lower 20s in the afternoon.

With temperatures hovering at or just below freezing Thursday night, and mist and fog possible, light ice could collect on surfaces, especially windshields.

Overnight, expect partly cloudy skies with the mercury falling back into the low-20s. Expect the chance of a flurry in the eastern half of the Big Country Sunday. Temperatures may briefly climb during the morning, but blustery winds will gust in from the north with rain fairly likely during the morning.

Though folks out and about may need a jacket on New Year's Eve, conditions here are a dream compared to what northern states will experience. It will also be windy; therefore, it will feel much colder. Snow prospects for early next week are low, but computer models are suggesting the chance for some snow Wednesday or Thursday.

For upstate NY, east of Lake Ontario, the NWS warned of "dangerously" cold wind chills of -20C to -34C throughout Friday. Look for lows in the mid to upper 20s with light wind. Saturday should be rather mild as clouds will gradually fill the skies. Wrap exposed pipes, bring your pets indoors, and check on neighbors, friends, and family members who might be even more adversely affected by the weather.
