Second of supermoon trilogy 'wolf moon' set for skies tonight

The moon will appear to be 16 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter tonight

The supermoon full moon is seen through Christmas lights on January 1, 2018 in Valletta, Malta.

But do not worry if you missed it, there will be a second chance to see the supermoon at the end of January.

There will also be a total eclipse of the moon then, making the January 31 moon a super blue moon eclipse. It will also have the distinction of being the second full moon of the month, and the second supermoon of the month, making it a "Super Blue Moon".

Wide-eyed revellers will look to the stars as the moon appears 7 per cent bigger and 12 to 14 per cent brighter.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Filipinos are in for several spectacles of the evening sky with the occurrence of a total lunar eclipse on January 31, which will be visible throughout the country. The moon rises at 4:17 p.m.

A supermoon is a full moon which reaches its fullest point when it is closest to Earth in its monthly orbit (perigee).

WIND CHILL ADVISORY: Schools delayed Tuesday morning amid risky cold
Wind chill temperatures are forecasted to improve slightly during the afternoon, but will quickly drop back during the evening. A very brutally cold New Year's Day it has been as temperatures will struggle to reach 0 degrees.

So the moon won't be as bright, but it will "take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow", NASA says, and could take on a "reddish hue".

The moon just like the Earth does not have a completely round orbit.

"Comparing a supermoon with a typical full moon from memory is very hard", he said.

Furthermore, there was a supermoon on December 3 and there will be yet another one on January 31 to complete the "Supermoon Trilogy" - much to the delight of photographers looking for creative opportunities. "Normally, we are used to seeing the full moon rising above the eastern horizon, but this time it will be best to watch it setting over the western horizon early in the morning", he explained.

With the moon being as close to Earth as it is, there is a significant impact on the tides.

The good news... you will not have to wait long at all.
