At least 9 injured in fire as fire burns through building in the Bronx

Tuesday in a four-story apartment building in the Bronx, which has a furniture store on the ground floor.

Dozens of fire trucks were at the scene as thick smoke poured out of the building and flames were through the roof.

The New York Fire Department said almost two dozen people were injured, including a firefighter.

"Children starting fires is not rare", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said on Friday, adding that the stairway "acted like a chimney".

The 23 civilians - including nine children - and a firefighter were rushed to hospitals after the 7-alarm blaze, Nigro said.

One resident told NBC news he fled the building, barefoot and barechested, with his three children into freezing temperatures that dipped as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. The cause of the fire was not immediately revealed.

A huge fire engulfed a Bronx apartment building overnight.

Five hours later, the fire crews were still fighting to control the blaze on the Bronx's Commonwealth Avenue.

At least 12 people have been injured.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the "worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century".
