Once in a blue moon

The 'wolf moon' over Mt Cargill

India will witness a total lunar eclipse on January 31, which is also a "blue moon".

A blood moon happens during a total or a partial lunar eclipse.

A "blue" moon has nothing to do with color. But since it's rare to get a second full moon in a month, that moon doesn't have a name, making it a "blue moon". As per reports, moon's lower half shall be visible brighter than the upper half. This unusual phenomenon when a full moon is observed for the second time in a single month is known as Blue Moon and occurs every 2.7 years approximately. While the saying "once in a blue moon" suggests rarity, these events are more common than you might think.

The last time all that happened together was nearly 152 years ago. And January's blue moon will be followed by another blue moon in late March.

A passenger plane passes in front of the wolf moon as it approaches Heathrow Airport in London on January 1. Secondly, the moon will be a supermoon.

The commonly used definition of a supermoon is any full moon that falls within the 90% of the lunar orbit closest to Earth.

This will be the "biggest full moon of 2018". On Jan. 1, a Supermoon appeared in some parts of the world, allowing people to see a fuller, bigger and brighter moon.

Dedicated stargazers say that it is the first time there has been a "super blue blood moon" for 150 years. This will be the first eclipse of 2018. There will be a meteor shower as well as a lunar eclipse during the course of January as well. This ideal lineup causes the sun's light to filter through Earth's atmosphere which causes a normally-bright moon to have a red surface.

To the east, Alaska, Hawaii and northwestern Canada will see the eclipse from start to finish.

Because of the way the light filters through the atmosphere during an eclipse, blue light is bounced away from the moon, while red light is reflected. To answer that question, we consulted the reference book Canon of Lunar Eclipses, 1500 B.C. - A.D. A scientist, Noah Petro, from the Goddard Space Flight of NASA confirmed that the supermoons provide the people a rare but great chance to see the moon on the closest distance to Earth.

Unless you are a regular moon-watcher, you may not notice anything different about this full moon.
