HP recalls even more laptop batteries because, you know, fire

HP recalls computer batteries over fire risk

Hewlett-Packard issued a voluntary recall Thursday for lithium-ion batteries inside various laptops and workstations over the potential fire and burn hazards.

According to the recall notice, around 50,000 units are affected, representing batteries shipped with notebooks and mobile workstations sold from December 2015 through December 2017.

The batteries were also sold as accessories or provided as replacements through HP, or an authorized HP Service Provider.

This time, HP and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimate about 50,000 U.S. batteries and 2,600 sold in Canada need immediate replacement to keep users out of harm's way.

Among the incident reports were three reports of property damage, totalling US$4,500, as well as one case where a customer suffered a first-degree burn to the hand.

Deviljho Is Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter: Worldlaunches on January 26 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with a PC release coming later in Autumn 2018. The addition of Deviljho was announced as a centerpiece for the first free DLC's additional monster.

The company also provided instructions on how to check if your laptop has a defective battery.

If the above list and reference table still leaves you in some doubt whether your system is affected or not, HP has created a special Battery Program Validation Utility. HP announced that it's recalling batteries for select laptop models, including some in the ProBook, Envy, and ZBook families.

The recall is only for the battery, not the computer itself. Instead, HP has developed a BIOS update that will put the battery into a "battery safety mode". While that should be enough to prevent the laptop owners from panicking, they are nonetheless advised to visit the specific site HP has set up to allay any fears or confusion out of this. Battery Safety Mode will discharge the battery and disable future charging until the battery is replaced.

HP says the batteries are not replaceable by the consumer.
