Protesters call on Twitter to ban Trump

In a vague post called "World Leaders on Twitter", Twitter awkwardly sidestepped the controversy over whether Trump's Twitter account violates its terms of service altogether, instead asserting that it doesn't matter if a world leader violates its terms of service - they should have a home on the platform nonetheless.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the tweet does not violate its terms of service because it is not a "specific threat".

Twitter made the statement after a swell of outrage over Trump's tweets this week, in which he boasted that he had a "nuclear button" that was "much bigger" and "more powerful" than North Korea's, denounced his former strategist Stephen K. Bannon and derided the mainstream media.

The company also sought to counter assertions that controversial figures like Trump were kept on the platform largely because they helped Twitter's bottom line.

Twitter's attempt to handle political speech on its site - and defining when and how that overlaps with violent speech - has been a long and often confusing process.

Twitter's rules "prohibit promoting violence against or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of their group characteristics, as well as engaging in abusive behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another person's voice".

WIND CHILL ADVISORY: Schools delayed Tuesday morning amid risky cold
Wind chill temperatures are forecasted to improve slightly during the afternoon, but will quickly drop back during the evening. A very brutally cold New Year's Day it has been as temperatures will struggle to reach 0 degrees.

Mr Trump was criticised last month by the British prime minister Theresa May for re-tweeting three inflammatory videos posted by a far-right group.

It's also not clear if there is an instance in which Twitter would remove a world leader's messages or account.

In an interview with United States broadcaster Voice of America, Pence said the president's leadership on the world stage has resulted in "measurable progress", especially on the issue of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

"No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions", Twitter said. "We work hard to remain unbiased with the public interest in mind", it added.

In the past, after receiving many inquiries as to why no action has been taken against Trump's account, Twitter updated its policies to explain why it won't ban him.
