Facebook Overhauls News Feed to Prioritize Friends and Family

Facebook begins testing local news app

Zuckerberg's counter-contention likewise lines up with Facebook multiplying down on what just it benefit, and not Twitter or news sites can offer.

"Pages making posts that people generally don't react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution".

The changes will take effect over the coming weeks.

Facebook introduced sweeping changes to the kinds of posts, videos and photos that its more than 2 billion members will see most, saying on Thursday that it will prioritize what their friends and family share and comment on while de-emphasizing content from publishers and brands. "And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard - it should encourage meaningful interactions between people", Mark Zuckerberg wrote.

In a blog post that accompanied Zuckerberg's message, Facebook head of News Feed Adam Mosseri warned that public Facebook Pages could see their reach, watch time and referral traffic decrease. "I'm changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions". Since then, Zuckerberg has made it a priority to clean up the platform and make it a better environment for Facebook's users.

Early Facebook executive and former vice president of growth, Chamath Palihapitiya, also accused Facebook of creating "short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops" that are "destroying how society works".

The company was already forced to announce a price cut on December 10 for its core camera product, the HERO5, due to weak pre-holiday sales.

News Feed is the centerpiece of the social network.

Ms Owen added, however, that Facebook had not been very clear about what sort of discussions the site's revamped algorithms would prioritise.

Given recent public scrutiny, the social network was now "in the hot seat", said Gabriel Kahn from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. That's why we've always put friends and family at the core of the experience.

After all, Facebook isn't exactly hiding the fact that in the news feed, family and friends and sharing come first.

After some time, Facebook's calculation change might be important to advance social attachment and make the Internet not so much exploitative but rather more significant.

But after a tough 2017, Mr Zuckerberg is perhaps learning now that in the wake of the fake news scandal, and a platform brimming with tedious clickbait, not all engagement is good engagement. There's no word on when the new feature would be pushed to more areas. Facebook is giving a good look at the configuration and testing of this engaging new attribute. With less prominence, expect some viral sites to very quickly go out of business.
