Natural disaster cluster strikes Iran-Iraq border

Residents in Baghdad felt an initial quake followed by aftershocks

In November 2017, a powerful magnitude 7.3 natural disaster hit the border areas between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat), killing over 300 people. At least 530 people were killed, and injured people were about 7,500. In Baghdad, people felt a quake shake the Iraqi capital, followed by what felt like aftershocks. According to the Azad News Agency, a crisis management team is being deployed to Kermanshah, although there are now no reports of any injuries.

Iranian state television reported people rushed out into the streets amid the temblors.

Iranian media are reporting that a magnitude 5.1 natural disaster has jolted the country's southern province of Kerman. The depth of the epicentre was around 10 km.

Kerman has recently seen several quakes, ranging in magnitude from 4 to 6.2.

The deadliest quake in Iran's modern history happened in June 1990, devastating many areas in the northern province of Gilan and killing around 37,000 people.

Iran is located over major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
