Britain blames threat of protests as Trump cancels London trip

Donald Trump US embassy

"London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted Trump had "got the message" that he was not welcome, referring to the backlash over the Queen's invitation".

"I am not a big fan of the Obama administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for "peanuts", only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars", he wrote.

Mr Trump also criticised the location of the new building in Vauxhall, south London, as an "off location", adding: "Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!" At the time, U.S. Ambassador Robert Tuttle said the decision to move to the five-acre site came after a "long and careful process".

Although the decision was not made under Obama, Trump is correct to say that the sale of the embassy was completed during the Obama administration.

"The US chancery in Grosvenor Square had aged beyond its ability to be improved to current security and life safety standards without extensive investment in infrastructure that would require appropriated dollars", he said.

It was moved from its Mayfair site because it was too small to put in the modern security it needed, the BBC's diplomatic correspondent James Landale said.

On Friday, as the President was mocked on Twitter his waxwork drew public attention as it was placed outside the new embassy by Madame Tussauds.

Ms May controversially extended the offer of a state visit when she became the first world leader to meet Mr Trump in the White House following his inauguration past year.

But a full-blown state visit replete with golden carriages and pomp has been deferred amid the threat of huge anti-Trump protests. Johnson said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Theresa May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump, and they were filmed emerging from the White House holding hands. She suggested a formal visit could still, but offered no details.

Mr Trump's decision not to visit was welcomed by critics outraged by the United States travel ban on some Muslim-majority countries, and more recently, his decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim videos posted by a British far-right organisation. She later said Trump took her hand in a gentlemanly gesture as they walked down a ramp.

The exchange prompted further calls to dump the visit.

"His visit next month would, without doubt, have been met by mass peaceful protests", the mayor added. "When it comes to the callibration between United Kingdom and USA government officials, we see actually a very strong and very good relationship right now that we are very happy about".

But Johnson accused Khan and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of damaging U.S. -Britain relations with their vocal criticism.

A Number 10 source said: "Boris expresses himself in his own inimitable way, but we agree that any risk to the crucial US-UK relationship is not in our country's best interests".
