All signs continue to point to Matt Patricia as next Lions coach

MWC RADIO

If the Detroit Lions are holding out hope of hiring New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as the franchise's next head coach, the team will be waiting at least another eight days. He can not officially accept the job until at least next week as the Patriots will face either the Jaguars or the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.

New England also is expected to lose offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is a finalist for both the Colts' and Giants' head-coaching jobs, per sources.

Apparently, that's no longer the case if it ever was.

Although no formal announcement can be made until New Englands season comes to an end, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that Patricia will soon make his way to the Motor City.

The Lions fired Jim Caldwell at the conclusion of their 2017 season, finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs.

Patricia will reunite with Lions general manager Bob Quinn- the two spent 12 years together in New England from 2004-2015.

An offensive lineman who studied aeronautical engineering at Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the 1990s, Patricia had three stops as a graduate or part-time assistant before breaking into the National Football League as a low-level assistant with the Patriots.

"I think that the one thing that everybody needs to understand about Matt Patricia is that he is a rocket scientist", former Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher said.

According to the team's website, Patricia has been the Patriots' defensive coordinator since 2012. Caldwell went 36-28 as the Lions head coach, with an 0-2 playoff record in four seasons.
