The false alert was reportedly sent out when an. Hotel guests scrambling for safety, seeking shelter in the basement, huddling together, fearing the worst.

Professional golfer Colt Knost, staying at Waikiki Beach during a PGA Tour event, said "everyone was panicking" in the lobby of his hotel.

State Representative Matt LoPresti told CNN he and his family sought safety in a bathtub but wondered why nuclear alert sirens had not sounded. He added that he and his wife can't wait to see their children. He said he was still in bed when the phone started going off "like insane".

Thirty-eight long minutes later, the Hawaiian Emergency Management Agency sent an update saying the alert was made in error.

The iconic singer was visiting the U.S. state over the weekend when an emergency alert was issued which told of the threat of a ballistic missile, and urged everyone to "take immediate shelter".

A spokesperson for the White House said that President Trump had been briefed on the alarm. He says because of the current tension with the United States and North Korea, he wasn't surprised by a potential attack.

He said Hawaii doesn't have fallout shelters, and even if there were any, residents probably wouldn't have time to reach them. He didn't receive official notification for 38 minutes. Gen. Joe Logan, said a written report would be prepared.

Honolulu attorney Richard Ing found some humor in the situation but acknowledged there are lessons to be learned. "It's the last thing I'm gonna do".

Hawaiian officials held a press conference later Saturday, to talk about the human error, and how they're going to keep a similar false alarm from happeneing again. Schatz wrote, "There needs to be tough and quick accountability and a fixed process".

The US Federal Communications Commission said it would launch a "full investigation" into the accidental alert.
