A magnitude 7.1 quake struck Peru Sunday morning, leaving at least one person dead and dozens injured.

The quake hit 31km south-southwest of Acari, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

An natural disaster with a magnitude of 7.3 has hit off the coast of Peru, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was 56 km south of Lomas town in Arequipa at a depth of 48 km.

"There are several homes affected and it is possible that the count of victims and injured will rise", Chavez said. A further 65 people were injured in the provinces of Caraveli and Nazca.

Parts of the country have been left without electricity and some houses have collapsed.

NY sues BP, Shell to 'protect city from climate change'
In total, the city's five pension funds hold roughly USD5 billion in the securities of over 190 fossil fuel companies. The mayor's office also hinted at recent disclosures about what the oil industry knew about climate change, and when.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski traveled to the towns of Chala and Acari, two of the areas most affected by the quake, to assess the damages and coordinate the response.

But a later message said "there is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake" and that the centre had not observed any tsunami waves.

A tsunami threat has been issued in Peru and Chile following a powerful quake just off the coast of South America.

The organisation said villages "may have suffered direct damage and triggered landslides are always a risk".

The quake on Sunday initially sparked a tsunami warning for some coasts in Peru and neighbouring Chile, but this was quickly called off.
