An natural disaster with a magnitude of 7.3 has hit off the coast of Peru, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was 56 km south of Lomas town in Arequipa at a depth of 48 km.

"There are several homes affected and it is possible that the count of victims and injured will rise", Chavez said. A further 65 people were injured in the provinces of Caraveli and Nazca.

NFL notebook: League will probe whether Raiders violated Rooney Rule
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Tuesday that he interviewed two minority candidates prior to Gruden's hiring. The Detroit Lions got fined $200,000 when it didn't interview a minority before hiring Steve Mariucci as coach in 2003.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski traveled to the towns of Chala and Acari, two of the areas most affected by the quake, to assess the damages and coordinate the response.

But a later message said "there is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake" and that the centre had not observed any tsunami waves.

A tsunami threat has been issued in Peru and Chile following a powerful quake just off the coast of South America.

The organisation said villages "may have suffered direct damage and triggered landslides are always a risk".

The quake on Sunday initially sparked a tsunami warning for some coasts in Peru and neighbouring Chile, but this was quickly called off.
