Turkey condemns USA plans to build new Syrian border security force

On December 22, 2017, U.S. Central Command Commander General Joseph Votel announced they would establish border forces in Syria, which he said would help prevent a resurgence of IS.

The U.S. -led coalition is working with its Syrian militia allies to set up a new Syrian Border Security Force with 30,000 members from the Syrian Democratic Forces army, led by the People's Protection Units or YPG. Turkey's National Security Council, which advises on military actions, is scheduled to meet on January 17.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday threatened to attack the Kurdish militia-held town of Afrin in northern Syria "in the days ahead" to clear it of "terrorists".

Ibrahim Kalin said that, instead of ending support for the YPG, as Ankara has requested, "the United States of America is taking worrying steps to legitimise this organisation and make it lasting in the region".

Afrin is controlled by a Kurdish militia known as the YPG, which Turkey views as a terror group and an extension of the Kurdish insurgency raging in its southeast.

Boult's fifer guides Kiwis to easy win vs Pakistan
Before long, it was 6-16 and the lowest-ever total - Zimbabwe's 35 against Sri Lanka in 2004 - suddenly looked under threat. It came down to Sarfraz (14no) and Mohammad Amir (14) to avoid that humiliation, as well as Pakistan's lowest total of 43.

The new force will be deployed at Syria's northern border with Turkey, southeastern border with Iraq and along the Euphrates River Valley, the line which separates the SDF and Syrian government forces.

Washington opposes those autonomy plans, even as it has backed the SDF, the anti-ISIL coalition's main partner in Syria. About half the force will be SDF veterans, and recruiting for the other half is under way, the Public Affairs Office said.

The coalition said the BSF would operate under SDF command and about 230 individuals were now undergoing training in its inaugural class. "Therefore, the ethnic composition of the force will be relative to the areas in which they serve", it said. The Kurds received US backing as the most effective local proxies against Islamic State in Syria, and the policy of arming them stoked tension between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

IED stands for improvised explosive device. Senior Kurdish official Hediye Yusuf wrote on Twitter that the Turkish operation against Afrin is a "violation" of the Syrian people and undermines worldwide efforts to reach a political solution in Syria.
