Google unveils $30bn infrastructure investment plans

Google Cloud Platform network cloud services Google Cloud infrastructure undersea cables global data traffic G Suite Machine Learning Engine Spanner BigQuery cloud connectivity

Google is expanding its cloud computing infrastructure in five new regions, and plans to build its own undersea cables.

The Netherlands and Montreal regions will open in Q1 2018, while Los Angeles, Hong King and Finland will follow. It's a big investment, though a drop in the bucket compared to the $30 billion Google has spent to date on improving its infrastructure over the past three years.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans to commission the three subsea cables in 2019, the internet giant said in a blog post.

"By deploying our own private subsea cable, we help improve global connectivity while providing value to our customers", Sloss continued, explaining the reason behind the new investments.

"Owning the cable ourselves has some distinct benefits", Treynor said. "It will serve Google users and customers across Latin America", Sloss added. Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) have also investing in a mix of undersea cables and data centers to boost availability and reduce lag time for their cloud services.

Google has invested in 11 undersea cables to date, including the three announced this week.

Airbus may end production of A380 superjumbo
If Emirates does not order the aircraft, he believes there will be "no choice but to shut down the programme". Emirates, based in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

The company said that the new cables would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take more than a year to install, and it would really prefer not to do it ...

A second cable, which will run from the USA east coast to Denmark, with a stopover in Ireland, will be 7242 kms in length.

Google will work with leading social network Facebook and other companies on a "Havfrue" cable linking the United States with Denmark and Ireland.

Finally, we come to the HK-G cable, which will see Google teaming with RTI-C and NEC to open up "multiple scalable, diverse paths to Australia", while at the same working hand-in-hand with the new data center that's scheduled to come online in Hong Kong.

The Havfrue cable will link the USA with Denmark and Ireland, while the Hong Kong Guam cable system (HK-G) will provide better connections between hubs in Asia and open new routes to Australia. The five regions will be added in 2018 beginning in this quarter, and then three subsea cables will be commissioned in 2019.

Building all of these cables will help Google deliver cloud services with a better experience. Google promises they are not done yet and there will be additional announcements of other regions.
