Dems say Schachtner senate win is a sign of things to come

In the special election to fill the open 10th Senate District seat, Democrat Patty Schachtner has emerged the victor after capturing 55 percent of the vote. Republican Sheila Harsdorf held the Senate seat for 16 years before she resigned in November to become Gov. Scott Walker's agriculture secretary and every county in the district voted for Trump in 2016. We're nicer than that.' " Ms Schachtner avoided mentioning voters" disillusion with Donald Trump's erratic government as another reason for her win. "A young parent. said, 'that ad made me feel like I was not good enough to run for public office.' To single people out for the unfortunate thing that happened to them. that resonated with a lot of folks". "People now are looking for a little more decency", he said.

In Wisconsin's 10 District, that overperformance resulted in a Democratic pickup (points colored in dark blue), but Republicans have been underperforming in many seats that they still managed to hold (colored pink).

Schachtner saw a $13,419 donation from the state Democratic party on January 9. But Tuesday's results caught the attention of at least one prominent Republican who's up for reelection in 2018.

Still, democrats say Tuesday's special election is part of a bigger picture.

Schachtner's win is sending alarm bells off in Republican circles, as the district has traditionally been a Republican stronghold. After her victory, Ms Schachtner explained in an interview that she thought she won because of the negative mailings from groups outside the district backing her opponent.

Dow Jones tops 26000 for first time as stock market boom continues
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index lost 0.09 percent and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe gained 0.19 percent. It measures the daily stock price movements of 30 large, publicly-owned USA companies.

The election comes at a tense political moment for the state, with a governor's race and US Senate seat at stake in the fall; questions about gerrymandering of state political maps in the courts; and with political observers around the nation watching all sorts of local and state races for signs of what 2018 races may bring for both parties.

"Voters are flat-out rejecting the Trump-GOP agenda that gives another giant tax cut to the top 1% and wealthy corporations, and they know that the Democratic Party is fighting for working families like theirs", the statement says.

Walker told reporters Wednesday in Milwaukee that the Democratic win was a "wake-up call to distinguish between the inaction of Washington versus the positive action we are taking in Wisconsin".

"Democrats from rural areas face an existential crisis", says the report.

The New York Times rolled the Democratic win in with other issues that will undoubtedly affect the November elections.
