Facebook Users Will Be Able To Rank News Source Trustworthiness

And we're starting next week with trusted sources.

A Facebook spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions asking whether Facebook will publicly share the complete list of trusted publishers and if the company will label posts and/or Pages from these publishers.

"After this change, we expect news to make up roughly four per cent of News Feed - down from roughly five per cent today. That's why it's important that News Feed promotes high quality news that helps build a sense of common ground".

"My hope is that this update about trusted news and last week's update about meaningful interactions will help make time on Facebook time well spent", he wrote Friday.

The official Facebook announcement specifies, again, that "people will see less public content, including news, video and posts from brands".

Facebook also said it is working on elevating local news, not particularly in News Feed but by growing a separate section called "Today In," which it announced earlier this month. So long as Facebook remains a corporate monolith with vast control over the entire worldwide media industry, this problem won't go away. As a piece published in Fast Company notes, limiting the exposure of users to information outside of their group makes them more prone to xenophobia and less open to the views of others.

Facebook is either unaware of - or, more likely - unwilling to deal with the fact that people have rabid, tribalistic loyalties to certain outlets.

OPEC and oil producing nations' newest oil scare: Prices rising too fast
Opec's report also showed a sharp downturn in Venezuelan oil production amid an economic crisis. Said the Organization Of Petroleum Exporting Countries in its monthly oil market reports.

He maintains his Outperform rating and $205 price target on FB stock, but he had important reminders about the lack of corporate governance at the company-something that would raise some serious flags if we were talking about nearly any other company besides Facebook.

For publishers, the change to prioritize "trusted sources" could be either great or awful news.

The company said it wasn't "comfortable" deciding for itself whether or not a news outlet is reliable. After all, it's safe to assume that some of these users are the same folks responsible for routinely making fake news spread more virally across the site than real news.

But that was before Facebook faced the wrath of users and U.S. lawmakers for spreading fake news and potentially manipulating the 2016 presidential election. That data will influence what others see in their news feeds.

Also past year, U.S. Republican lawmakers expressed concern that Facebook was suppressing stories from conservative news sources.

In the USA, there has been a growing partisan split in perceptions of the media. More details on initiatives to identify informative news outlets may be shared later this year, according to a Facebook blog post.
