Saudi-led coalition announces $1.5-bn aid to Yemen

He called on United Nations to intensify the inspection and investigation mechanism and assign its center in Djibouti to prevent the Iranian backed Houthi militias from continuing smuggling of weapons and military hardware into Yemen.

"Now, and not tomorrow, to save the Yemeni people from definite hunger", he tweeted. A senior government official indicated more funding could be announced for the poor Middle Eastern country this year.

"Sadly, the conflict continues in Yemen, and its people - particularly women and children - continue to suffer greatly", said Bibeau in a statement.

The kingdom said Monday the coalition it heads in Yemen would also "lead the expansion of additional Yemeni ports" to receive cargo and humanitarian assistance, ensure multiple daily flights of cargo planes carrying aid from Saudi Arabia to Yemen's Marib province, and establish "safe passage corridors" to ensure transportation of aid to non-governmental organizations operating inside Yemen.

Canada faces accusations, though, that it's playing both sides of the conflict.

The Saudis have allocated almost $57 billion for military spending in 2018, or about 22 percent of the overall government budget for this year. A Canadian Crown corporation that brokered the deal gets an unspecified cut of the proceeds, as does General Dynamics Land Systems Canada, which makes them.

"Yes, it's nice the Saudis are sending humanitarian aid to Yemen".

Shooting reported at Texas high school, gunman in custody
A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized after a shooting in a cafeteria at a Texas school this morning, local officials said. Police were seen responding the the active shooting, where the suspected gunman was taken into custody. .

Over the past year, the UN's efforts to address what it has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis have been hampered by a crippling blockade of rebel-held ports by the Saudi-led coalition. Canadian-made combat vehicles have been photographed and filmed being deployed by the Saudis in the fighting in Yemen.

However, the Yemen Data Project have recorded 356 air strikes targeting farms, 174 targeting market places and 61 air strikes on food warehouses from March 2015 and September 2017, led by Saudi coalitions, which did not help matters.

"Humanitarian assistance is not the solution to the plight of the people of Yemen, but it is the only lifeline for millions of them", said Jamie McGoldrick, Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen.

More than three-quarters of Yemen's population - 22.2 million people - are now dependent on aid in Yemen, the United Nations says.

A source close to the Saudi government told Deutsche Welle that the $2 billion is a "gift", not a loan, and the legitimate Yemeni government will not be expected to repay it.

On the other hand, the Final Communiqué of the meeting of the Contact Group reiterated its strong commitment to standing with Yemen's unity, sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity and the rejection of any interference in its internal affairs.
