Television's Murphy Brown is returning to primetime with Candice Bergen (Rules Don't Apply, The Meyerowitz Stories - New and Selected) set to reprise her starring role in the comedy series. As CBS put it in a press release, "Murphy Brown returns to a world of cable news, social media, fake news and a very different political and cultural climate". Bergen will also executive produce.

Original creator Diane English is also returning. On the Big Four, the most notable revivals include similarly groundbreaking series as NBC's Will & Grace, ABC's upcoming Roseanne revisit and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Fox's The X-Files.

The original Murphy Brown aired on CBS from 1988 to 1998.

In 2012, English said that she was having conversations with CBS about bringing Murphy Brown back for a few episodes during the election year. Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud all have busy TV careers.

During its original run, Bergen won five Emmys for Lead Actress, setting a record that was only recently broken by Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep.

Again multi-camera, it is the first straight-to-series order for the network's 2018-19 season and comes days after ordering pilots from three female writers. The iconic show received 18 Emmy wins - including five wins for Bergen alone - as well as three Golden Globes and three Screen Actors Guild awards.

The cast of "Murphy Brown" reunites on the 25th anniversary of the CBS TV-newsroom comedy, which famously angered Dan Quayle, as reruns begin this month on Encore.
