Sheriff's Deputy In Suburban Denver Shot

We don't know if deputies are searching for additional suspects. When deputies caught up to the man, the suspect pulled out a handgun and started firing at deputies, striking one of them in the chest.

The deputy has not been identified.

The injured deputy was taken to Denver Health, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A law-enforcement official in Adams County apparently was shot Wednesday evening in Thornton, according to the sheriff's office.

Local TV stations broke into regularly scheduled programming to cover the shooting scene.

The neighborhood is located in unincorporated Adams County, one block east and south of the City of Thornton's southern municipal boundary.

Earlier this year, a deputy was shot and killed in another Denver suburb.

A Douglas County Sheriff's deputy was killed on December 31 in a standoff in a Denver suburb where four other deputies and two civilians were also shot.

A dragnet consisting of SWAT teams, Aurora police, and canine units continued the search for the suspects. "Our thoughts are with the injured Deputy, friends and family". Incidents like this are a tragedy for all of us. "We stand strong with our brothers and sisters in blue".

The ACSO also weighed in.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said in a statement released late Wednesday: "We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died". "Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as this is a very hard time for everyone".

Fox News reports that authorities said they are looking for "two light-skinned black males or dark-skinned Hispanic males dressed in all black".
