RUSSIA: Presidential vote: Navalny detained on day of protests

Police also detained several employees of Mr Navalny's Anti Corruption Foundation as well as regional supporters his team said

According to The Associated Press, about 1,000 people gathered Sunday in central Moscow's Pushkin Square for a demonstration. "There is nobody to vote for", the 27-year-old said. "Maybe my kids will live in a better country".

Navalny, the most prominent foe of President Vladimir Putin, organized the protests to urge a boycott of Russia's March 18 presidential election, in which Putin is sure to win a fourth term.

They had placards that read: "They've stolen the election from us" and "Elections without Navalny are fake". "Come to Tverskaya. You do not go for me, but for yourself and your future", Navalny tweeted in Russian. "It may be for better, it may be for worse".

Moscow Police said Navalny was taken to a police station after his arrest in the middle of the demonstration and charged for illegally organising a protest.

"I was detained. It does not matter".

In an interview with CNN at his Moscow headquarters last week, Navalny accused the Putin administration of being "built on corruption" and warned of growing impatience for political change.

Navalny has called on supporters to continue the demonstrations despite his detainment.

Trump ready to apologise for retweeting United Kingdom videos
Tensions between the two were not on display in Davos, however."I have great respect for everything you're doing", Trump told May. You know that right, Piers?' I would have had a different attitude ...

Navalny rose to prominence with detailed reports about corruption among top Russian officials, which he popularized on social media to circumvent state control of television.

"I have been detained". They grabbed him and forced him to the ground on the pavement, and then dragged him feet first into the patrol wagon, the video footage showed. "Anyone who is sitting and thinking 'I won't come to the protests, ' they'll cut down your door sooner or later, too".

Mr Navalny was arrested as protests called by him, ranging from a few dozen to several hundred people, took place across the country.

And the protests have continued Sunday.

Navalny and several others were seized by police as Russian Federation approaches a presidential election, to be held on 18 March, which is expected to return Putin to power. Sokolova held up a sign that used a diminutive form of Vladimir: "Stop reigning, Vovka, our choice is protest".

"Putin has been in power for 18 years now", he said. In polar Murmansk, just a handful of people milled about under a giant New Year's tree while children played nearby. Grudina said she initially got involved in activism by campaigning against higher public-transit costs in 2016.
