Heavy Flooding Hits Paris, France as River Seine Rises to 19 Feet

The river is expected to peak in Paris on Sunday at 6 meters or less (19 feet, 8 inches) on the Austerlitz scale — below the 6.1 meters reached in exceptional floods in 2016, and well below the 8.6 meters hit in record floods in 1910.

Another 1,500 people have no electricity in their homes due to the flooding. But they warned that it will take more than a week for the river to reach "classic levels" for the season.

The swollen Seine peaked Monday at more than four meters above its normal level after almost 1,500 people were forced to evacuate from their homes.

River Seine exceeded its normal water level by more than 13 feet over the weekend after weeks of heavy rainfall.

The river overflowed in some places this week when water levels reached just over 5 meters (nearly 17 feet).

Meanwhile, the Seine-Maritime was added early on Monday, with floodwaters from Paris heading downstream, coupled with strong incoming tides forecast over the next few days blocking the flow of water into the sea.

A health centre in Paris's northwestern suburbs, where 86 patients were receiving care, was also evacuated yesterday.

White House Eyes End of Funding for Space Station
Russian Federation also manages the Soyuz program, which is now the only way for astronauts to get to or from the space station. The ISS is also aided by the private SpaceX firm, serving as a cargo delivery ship for the astronauts.

A main commuter line, the RER C, has halted service at Paris stops until at least February 5, and some expressways that run alongside the Seine have been closed.

The capital's bateaux mouches rivercraft was out of service, and only emergency services were authorised to navigate the Seine.

The French capital remained on flood alert after the river burst its banks, leaving streets flooded and forcing part of the lower level of the famous Louvre Museum to close.

More favourable weather is expected for the week ahead, but even once the water levels start to recede forecasters and officials say it will be a slow process, as much of the ground in northern France is already waterlogged.

Residents along the river have been forced to leave their homes and in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, a south-eastern suburb of the city, people have had to wade through thigh-high muddy water and use boats to get around.

At the Pont d'Austerlitz, the Seine is about 26m deep, according to the Paris mayor's office.
