Google credits AI for stopping more rogue Android apps in 2017

Google rolls out update for 'Files Go' app, here are the new features

It rolled out new policies for developers and today, the search giant announced that it removed over 700,000 apps that violated the Google Play policies in 2017, which is a whopping 70% more than the apps taken down in 2016.

Google Play Protect scans installed apps to monitor for malicious activity. Google long used static analysis techniques to find potentially malicious code in new apps, but with the addition of machine learning in the last few years, the company is now able to find a far wider range of apps.

More precisely, Google said that past year it halved the chance that a user would install a bad app. Andrew Ahn, a product manager at Google Play, explained in a blog post that although malware and other harmful apps may be on the rise, Google is also getting better at catching them.

Speaking of Copycat applications, Google stated that deceiving users by impersonating famous apps is one of the most common violations.

Since a year ago, Google has been very strict over the applications on Google Play Store.

The committee is scheduled to convene in Washington this week for its annual winter meeting. House Speaker Paul Ryan says he's giving a $1,000 donation from Wynn to charity.

The most critical information shared by Google today is the fact that 99 percent of these apps with misleading or abusive content were identified and removed by the company even before anyone could install them a year ago. Google said that the high success rate of removal comes from more improved techniques to detecting these malicious apps. The US and Germany were kept apart by Taiwan on the App Store and South Korea on Google Play. Google took down more than 250,000 of these apps in the previous year. "With one tap in the list or grid view, you can easily filter to see files stored on your SD card", said Devesh Sarwate, software engineer, Files Go, Google. This improved the company's ability to detect abusive apps that features inappropriate content and malware.

Of the apps removed in 2017, 250,000 of them were trying to emulate already released apps.

Recently an app was found stealing credentials of Android users by impersonating an Uber app.

The PHA includes those that are malware or those that are trying to commit fraud without your consent or knowledge. Although Google Play Services helps make Protect and other security measures available across a wide range of Android versions, it's still true that most Android phones aren't running recent editions of the operating system.

Earlier this month, Google removed 60 games from the Play Store, which displayed pornographic advertisements, something strictly against Google's policies for publishing apps on the Play Store. If there's a fix that requires a newer OS, you're stuck.
