Trump to keep Guantanamo Bay prison open

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order announcing his intent to keep the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay open, the White House announced Tuesday.

"In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds of unsafe terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield". In the address, Trump said that he had signed an executive order to keep Guantanamo open. They are unlawful enemy combatants.

Practically, not much is expected to change with Trump's new order, said Lee Wolosky, who was Obama's special envoy at the State Department for closing Guantanamo.

The prison, which was opened by President George W. Bush to hold suspected militants captured overseas after the September 11, 2001, attacks, came to symbolize harsh detention practices that opened the United States to accusations of torture.

Although many prisoners were released from Guantanamo under Obama, he was unable to make good on the pledge to close it altogether, due to concerns over the fate of some prisoners deemed too risky for either being freed or moved to USA soil.

Both the Trump and Obama administrations have claimed that ISIS is an "associated force" covered by the military authorization that Congress passed in 2001, after the 9/11 attacks. "I am also asking the Congress to ensure that, in the fight against ISIS and al-Qa'ida, we continue to have all necessary power to detain terrorists ― wherever we chase them down".

Kim Kardashian Has This to Say to Anyone Shading Her Controversial Braids
However, the 37-year-old also seemed to hit back at critics by captioning a photo of her on the phone: "Hi, can I get zero f-- please, thanks".

"When possible, we have no choice but to annihilate them. I worked to find a way to close the prison without compromising security", Bush wrote in his memoir.

One of the most infamous detainees there is the alleged mastermind of the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States, Khalid Sheikh Muhammad. When necessary, we must be able to detain and question them.

"I would certainly consider that, yes", Trump told CBS.

He has the backing of a vocal group of prominent Republicans, including Sens.

During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to "load (Guantanamo Bay) up with some bad dudes."

Of the more than 700 who have been held there since 2002, only a small minority of detainees have been charged with a crime, and fewer still have completed trial in a military court.
