Mattis says U.S. has no evidence of Syrian use of sarin gas

Tillerson said Russian Federation is violating a 2013 agreement it made with the USA on the removal of chemical weapons from Syria and is helping the Syrian government breach the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans their use.

"We are even more concerned about the possibility of sarin use, (but) I don't have the evidence,"Mattis said".

Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon on Friday that the U.S.is looking for evidence to support the claims.

Washington said this week that it could consider military action against the Syrian government if it continued to use chemical weapons.

However, another official said that the Trump administration hopes that stepped-up worldwide sanctions and diplomatic pressure against Damascus will help rein in Syria's chemical weapons program.

Others affected by the crack down are Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka, whose security has been withdrawn. "We are also deeply concerned by the Government's action to shut down, intimidate, and restrict the media".

The US officials further said that Syrian authorities appeared to have embraced ground-based means for launching chemical strikes rather than the air attacks because the ground-based operations are hard to detect. That strike followed a deadly chemical weapons attack by Assad's government.

The US launched airstrikes against a Syrian government military base last April after more than 80 people were killed in a sarin gas attack against a town held by the Syrian opposition. "The OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and Resolution) Fact-Finding Mission has confirmed multiple incidents of chemical weapons use in Syria, including the use of the toxic industrial chemical chlorine as a weapon", reads the.

However, Syria and Russian Federation had rejected the United States claims, suggesting that militants might have detonated the chemical weapons on the ground.

Mattis made the remarks after senior U.S. officials said Trump was prepared to order more strikes amid reports that the Syrian government is developing new types of chemical weapons.
