PlayStation 4 to Get New Parental Controls, Notifications Management Features, and More

Sony has revealed a number of new features that are set to come to the PlayStation 4 as part of the system's upcoming 5.50 update.

For those of you with children, update 5.50 will introduce Play Time Management, which will "allow family managers (and adult family members who are set as guardians) to manage PS4 playtime for child family members on PSN". The child will receive notifications telling them when the time is about to expire so they can save and quit their game.

There's also the option to add extra game time and the choice to automatically log the child out of the PS4 once their allotted playtime is over.

In a new blog post on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony detailed the features included with the new firmware update, codenamed "KEIJI".

Read on for the full list of changes, which are now being experienced by closed trial testers, and will soon be made available to all PS4 owners. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look ideal on your dashboard. Xbox One added play limits a year ago with the Creators Update, and the Xbox One X hardware has been able to supersample games since last November.

Just hop into the system settings menu to activate it and you should be good to go. You'll also be able to customize your PS4 Home Screen with custom wallpapers imported from a USB stick.

What do you think of the free February PlayStation Plus games? You'll also be able to delete old notifications to help clean up your list. One of the sections allows you to see everything you've purchased on your account, while the other shows only what's now installed on your console. What the latter includes is obvious, but the new parental settings let parents limit how much child accounts can play for day. It will also display who is now online.

Speaking of Background Music, you'll now be able to listen to music while streaming a game on PS Now.

Other features coming along with this update include enhancements to the Quick Menu, notifications, and new customization options for Tournaments team pages.

So while it is no PSN ID name change, the PS4 System Software Update 5.50 is quite substantial for anyone who owns a PS4 or PS4 Pro.

PS4 Pro owners will be ecstatic to see a new "supersampling mode" under Settings, enabling those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing certain games on their PS4. "Please note performance will vary, as games are optimized differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro".

That is to say, Sony had in theory replaced the original Gold headset with the Platinum model, which offered an even more precious metal in the title and new 3D audio features, albeit at a $159.99 price tag instead of the original Gold's $99.99. With the beta in full swing, Sony is detailing what testers can expect from 5.50.
