Early Britons had dark skin, DNA reveals

ALAMYCheddar Man is thought to have died in his twenties

First modern Brits were black, groundbreaking DNA test on 10,000-year-old fossil reveals A pioneering genetic analysis of the UK's oldest complete skeleton, which is around 10,000 years old, has revealed that the first modern Britons had a "dark to black" complexion.

Many dismissing the scientists claims as left-wing "propaganda" and asked "does this mean nobody can be accused of racism now".

Meanwhile, many were bewitched by Cheddar Man's dashing appearance.

Guardian journalist Gary Younge similarly referenced the news to attack alt-right leader Richard Spencer.

Cheddar Man's remains were initially exhumed in Gough's Cave in Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, England in 1903. These so-called "Western Hunter-Gatherer's", a group that includes Cheddar Man's ancestors, migrated into Europe at the end of the last ice age.

Dr. Tom Booth of the Museum said: "If a man with this skin color lived today, we would call him black, certainly darker than we would expect from a European".

Described by UCL as one of the most challenging human DNA projects to date, Cheddar Man had his genome sequence analysed to establish his appearance.

That migration was followed by others, including Vikings, Gauls, Romans and Normans, many of whom had fair skin and hair, leaving about 10% of current white Britons with DNA matches to Cheddar Man and his contemporaries.

Rooney knows where Man Utd will be looking to strengthen in summer
It should be noted, too, that this is not a vintage year for European club sides, with very few standing out as the favourites. This isn't the first time the United manager has complained about Old Trafford lacking the buzz.

Would everyone in Britain at that time have looked like Cheddar Man?

Dr Chris Stringer the principal researcher of human origin at the Natural History Museum in London with the skull of Cheddar Man.

Channel 4 are releasing a documentary about Cheddar Man and the reconstruction titled "First Brit: Secrets of the 10,000 Year Old Man". But the team led by Professor Ian Barnes and Dr. Selina Brace, both at The Natural History Museum, was lucky.

The discovery shows that pale skin tones developed in Europe much later than originally thought.

The Museum first worked with brothers Alfons and Adrie Kennis in 2014 when the Dutch duo created life-size models of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens males as part of the Museum's major exhibition Britain: One Million Years of the Human Story.

"He is just one person, but also indicative of the population of Europe at the time", Booth said in a statement.

And though certain things were known about the man that became the famous skeleton-a large lesion in his skull suggested he suffered a violent death, and his skeleton showed signs of a bone infection-up until now, scientists have never had a clear picture of what the ancient man looked like.

This was revealed in advance of a documentary about Cheddar Man.
