Miami Beach resident Carlos Cordeiro becomes first Hispanic president of U.S. soccer

US Soccer presidential election live stream: How to watch online

Carlos Cordeiro has been elected the new president of US Soccer. In their short speeches, the candidates made the case for how U.S. Soccer needs to change.

Gulati fell on his sword after watching Bruce Arena's side miss out on reaching the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup and was given a standing ovation at the culmination of his 12 years in the role. He got 68.6 percent of the votes in the third round, followed by Kathy Carter (10.6), Kyle Martino (10.6), Eric Wynalda (8.9) and Hope Solo (1.4).

Cordeiro became the chairperson of the budget committee - an important position to oversee how money was spent, and perhaps most important, what members wanted it one spent on, and as a director of the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

"I think we are at an inflection point in soccer history in this country", he remarked after his victory. In addition, he represents U.S. Soccer on the CONCACAF Council and FIFA's Stakeholders Committee.

"I am so humbled".

"Perhaps that was to my advantage", Cordeiro said afterwards, "but I focused on the issues that were important to the members".

Any notion the electorate was in a mood for change was dispelled on the first ballot when Cordeiro and Carter received 71 percent of the combined vote and the other six candidates - the so-called gang of six - received just 29 percent.

Israel downs Iranian drone and strikes Syria, F 16 crashes
An Iranian drone entered Israel from the Golan Heights Friday night, which the IAF shot down once it was in Israeli airspace. In retaliation the Israeli Air Force has launched air strikes against Iranian targets in Syria.

Her closeness to Don Garber - he is the CEO of SUM and Major League Soccer owners have all had ties in the company since 2002 - had left the rest of the field suggesting a serious conflict of interests.

And that story is what must be repeated, he says, for U.S. Soccer to fulfill its mission to make soccer a preeminent sport. "I can not stand back and watch it any longer".

Most soccer fans would not have known who Cordeiro was if he ran into them, but behind the scenes he was well known to the membership. "They represent everybody, and what they did is they failed many of us". Despite their efforts to gain public favor, however, there are no votes given to the public. All eight were given five minutes to address delegates before voting began. User error caused the first ballot to be scrapped and redone, with only 80% able to make their decisions.

The 58-year-old had faced mounting pressure following the United States men's shock failure to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

The field is rounded out by another ex-USMNT player - Paul Caligiuri - as well as lawyers Steve Gans and Eric Winograd. It can't be we have only three, three and a half million kids playing soccer.

Soccer is the most expensive sport for children to play - some US Soccer-affiliated teams charge $4,000 per season for players to take part - leaving talented youngsters priced out. MLS, as well as the National Women's Soccer League and United Soccer League, shifted their support to Cordeiro after the second ballot.
