United States mother abandons newborn after giving birth in airport bathroom

The newborn baby was then found in the restroom along with a note by an employee of a firm that provides rental cars who informed the airport authorities.

Airport authorities believe the woman gave birth to the baby in a restroom cubicle at around 10pm on 14 January.

Airport police are looking for a woman who they say may have given birth and left her baby in an airport restroom with a note asking authorities to find him a good home.

The note left with the tyke read, "Please help me".

At the end of the note, the mother pleaded, "I just want what is best for him and it's not me".

Juana Quintana, a custodian, said she encountered the woman, who was holding the baby, in a restroom. She says the woman told her the naked baby was three months old.

Mattis to meet Turkish Defense Minister Canikli in Brussels to discuss Syria
Secretary of Defense James Mattis will meet Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli next week in Brussels and discuss the situation in Afrin and Manbij, Mattis told reporters Thursday.

All 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Washington DC have a law known as the safe-haven or Baby Moses law which allows mothers to leave newborns at certain locations such as hospitals without fear of penalty. The custodian also found bloody clothes in a trash can.

The baby, who appeared healthy, was transported to a nearby hospital and is now in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Services, the release said.

The child was in good condition, authorities said. Airport officials are trying to identify the mother, "but we've exhausted our resources", Butler said in a statement.

In 1999, Texas became the first state to pass a safe-haven law following reports of 13 abandoned babies in the Houston area in the first 10 months of the year, which prompted public outcry and legislative action, according to a Nevada state government review of the legal framework.

However, it is not known whether the baby's mother will face charges if found as airports are not considered a "safehaven" under the law.
